Blairgowrie RDA is celebrating after a generous donation from a Carsie resident enabled us to greatly improve our facilities.

The group received the bequest from John O’Rafferty on behalf of his late wife Phyllis in memory of their daughter Claire, who sadly died at the age of four in March 1995.

Thanks to the family’s kindness, we have taken on a new horse named in memory of the youngster, who had cerebral palsy. We have also installed a substantial new pony shelter at our field at Easter Rattray Farm on the outskirts of the town.

Members of our group were delighted to welcome John and his sister-in-law Joan Halley to unveil a plaque at the shelter and to meet Claire.

Rhona Christie, chair of Blairgowrie RDA, said: “We were absolutely thrilled to receive this legacy from John and his family. Every donation we receive is very much appreciated, but this gift in memory of their young daughter is very special to us.

“With the addition of Claire – the biggest of our five equines – we can now offer lessons to disabled adults as well as children. Horse riding with the RDA brings many physical and emotional benefits, it boosts confidence, improves communication skills and helps to build relationships, and this donation means that we will be able to expand our services to the local community.”

From everyone at Blairgowrie RDA, thank you.
