Blairgowrie RDA is a member group of the Riding for the Disabled Association. Our purpose is to enable people with physical and learning disabilities to ride for the benefit of their health and wellbeing and to achieve their goals.
Our group offers riding sessions for special needs children from primary schools in the Blairgowrie community area, including Alyth, Coupar Angus, Burrelton and Meigle. In a typical school term week, we cater for 25-30 children with various mental and physical challenges. We also offer lessons for adults with disabilities.
We offer volunteering opportunities for people of all ages, interests and abilities. Our volunteers come from all backgrounds and bring with them a wealth of skills, from pony care and teaching to DIY know-how. Experience with horses isn’t essential and full training will be given.
As a registered charity, all of our activities are funded through donations, grants and fundraising activities. We are a group who believe passionately in the service we offer to the local community and welcome any financial support you can give us.
We have five ponies and horses here at Blairgowrie RDA – Lady, Morven, Rosa, Tash and Tony. Let’s find out a little bit about them.
Lady is our lovely Highland mare, who has the most beautiful eyes. She’s a very willing girl and enjoys all the fun activities in the school with our riders.
Morven is a handsome boy – and he knows it! He’s very laid-back and nothing fazes him. Morven’s favourite pastime is annoying Tony by chasing him and pulling his tail!
Rosa is Little Miss Inquisitive! She loves to know everything that’s going on in the yard and meeting all our riders. Her friendly nature means she’s a firm favourite with everyone.
Tash is our gentle giant, standing at an impressive 16hh! Like Morven, she is very laid-back and is quickly learning about her new role as an RDA horse.
Tony “the Pony” is a lovely boy with a great nature and the most wonderful mane and tail. He and Morven are regularly spotted play fighting in their field, but really they are best buddies!
Here’s what some of our clients and volunteers say about Blairgowrie Riding for the Disabled
Volunteering with Blairgowrie RDA is great fun – everyone is very friendly and the ponies are lovely. It’s so rewarding to see just how much benefit and enjoyment the riders get from coming here.
My granddaughter spent time with your group before lockdown through her school and she would love to come back to see the horses, especially Erin. She still talks about her and is desperate to get back pony riding.
